Capturing Youth's Fleeting Moments
Shakespeare once said in As You Like It, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." This reminds us that each of us performs our roles on life's stage before we make our final exit.
A Memorable First Encounter
When I first encountered Michael’s work at the 2024 Youngplace Art Fair in Toronto, I couldn’t help but stop in my tracks at each vividly conveyed moment of youth. Chaotic and dark clubs, sun-soaked beaches, and unrefined youthful energy emanating from unnamed living spaces—each scene was simply captivating. I believed that such raw emotion could only come from life itself, whether experienced directly or vicariously. It compelled me to approach the artist and introduce myself.
It was a grateful moment when our young and sincere artist welcomed the interaction with openness and curiosity. He may not remember, but at that moment I thought, “How beautiful is youth.”
Background and Inspiration
Today’s featured artist, Michael Martins, was born and raised in Brampton, ON, and currently lives in London, England. Both England and Canada remain deeply influential in shaping his identity. London, in particular—with its architectural beauty and creative energy, from classical to contemporary—continues to serve as an inexhaustible source of artistic inspiration. It’s also where he lives and works as a full-time teacher.
“My work captures fleeting moments of youth culture, transforming spontaneous 'throwaway photos' into dramatic painted canvases. I find power in elevating these casual snapshots through paint strokes, creating a frozen-in-time quality. Recently, my focus has shifted toward exploring performative romance—the intriguing tension of intimate moments deliberately enacted before a camera lens.”
Artistic Journey
Interestingly, Michael’s artistic journey began because of a high school crush and grew from a passion for comics. It wasn’t until his second year at Queen’s University that he learned from Canadian painter Dan Hughes how to simplify painting into a repeatable process and infuse life into it. This helped him gain the technical foundation to fully pursue his artistic passion.
Now, after graduating, he maintains a consistent work schedule. On weekdays, he teaches school and runs an after-school art club for children. On weekends, he dedicates longer hours to his own art practice. For him, creation is like fitness—it requires discipline and consistency. His sketchbooks and phone are filled with ideas that drive him to the studio, even on uninspired days. He believes showing up is necessary.

His earlier experiences—striving to be accepted into the Regional Arts Program (RAP) in high school, achieving that goal, and going through the cycle of applying and being rejected from artistic opportunities—have made him more resilient.
“Painting to me is like a runner’s relationship with a treadmill. There are days when you don’t want to run, but once your shoes are laced up and you’re on the treadmill, you know you have to run.”
Capturing Universal Moments
Unlike his steady routine, Michael’s artwork captures snapshot-like, fleeting moments of life. In that brief instant when the camera flash goes off, we all become protagonists of our own stories. The characters in his paintings convey a universal quality—they could represent your past, someone else’s present, or even a dream you once had. The idea that anyone can be the main character on life’s stage speaks to a collective hided desire, especially in today’s world where social media makes every moment a performance.

The energy in the flash effect and the vivid expressions in his work resonate deeply, often triggering personal memories in the viewer.
The traces of paint pulled downward by gravity seem to visually express the pace of fleeting youth and the weight of emotion. Like the fingertips of someone trying to hold onto a moment that’s already slipping away—beautiful, yet transient.
“When my audience looks at my work, I expect them to connect with a time in their life when they were living out one of the experiences I’ve highlighted. The high contrast, flash photography, and bold expressions heighten these moments and allow people to connect with the work on a deeper level.”
Community and Challenges
Like many artists, Michael relies on Toronto’s art fairs and markets to promote his work and connect with fellow artists. However, he finds the various costs—application, acceptance, booth, and equipment fees—challenging. As the founder of Artistry Community, a Canadian digital exhibition platform, this is a moment when I am reminded of the urgent need to support local Canadian artists.
As someone primarily based in England, Michael also uses platforms like Instagram to communicate with audiences and maintain a presence in the art world.
The Value of Art and Travel
What Michael treasures most in life as an artist is freedom and the opportunity to travel. In April 2024, one of his greatest joys was visiting the UFC headquarters to collaborate with artist Gian Galang on a mural for the UFC 300 card. Training at the UFC Performance Institute and spending time with fighters was an unforgettable experience, and the mural was nothing short of magnificent.
His life in art and travel continues to flourish.
“I am just so blessed that art has given me all this access to life experiences I would have never had if I had chosen another path. Art has given me so many incredible opportunities to travel, work, and exhibit. I don't think I would be the man I am today without art.”
Looking ahead, Michael hopes to one day see his work published in editorial magazines or collaborate with musicians—especially in the dance music scene—by performing live action paintings during their sets. These dreams reflect his passion for blending visual art with energetic, real-time experiences.

As someone who has seen the honesty and intensity in his work firsthand, I truly believe these dreams are not far off. I’ll be cheering for the day we see Michael’s art lighting up both the pages of a magazine and the stage of a live performance.
